Satanism and Magical Therapy:
Moody's Churches and Resocialization Theory
---------------------------------------------------
excerpts about Satanism from the excellent book:
"Religious Movements in Contemporary America",
by Irving I. Zaretsky and Mark P. Leone,
and primarily the written expression of
Edward J. Moody, within "Magical Therapy:
An Anthropological Investigation of
Contemporary Satanism";
the whole published by Princeton University Press, 1974.

Section Introduction
"Psychological Dimensions of Religious Innovation"
p 281-2 "Moody argues that today there is a revival of
black magic and Satanism in contemporary
America among many sectors of the population.
By membership in Satanic groups individuals
make themselves the target of the community's
scorn and aggression. Why then do individuals
persist? They persist because the magic
"works" by helping them achieve the goals
they desire. He analyzes the magical rituals
such as the Invocation of Lust and the
Shibboleth to show how they help practicing
Satanists, members of the Church of the
Trapezoid, to achieve their goals.
"Moody points out the kind of therapy offered
by this group and examines its results. He
explains the rituals of the Satanic church in
terms of models taken from behavioral
psychology, because he feels that much of
what goes on in Satanic rituals is explained
better in terms of short term behavior change
than by psychoanalytic and anthropological
models. He argues that this religious group
absorbs the deviants that society shuts out.
These are people who sometimes have not left
society or dropped out but have been shut
out. In that sense Satanists resocialize
those shut out by the dominant society. Some
of the groups' [sic] value are not really too
distant from the culture's values. Such
groups are replays of the dominant cultural
value system."

NOTES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1] - editor's note: the reference to the Satanist external and interior
social body identifier ('Church of Satan', 'First Church of Satan',
'Church of the Trapezoid', 'First Church of the Trapezoid') shifts
occasionally within this article by Moody. I observed this and tried
to interfere with it as little as possible so as to give the reader
the full effect of this academic seminal work.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
[2] - the author, Marcello Truzzi, is supposed to also have in the works
text titles "The Sociology of the Occult in America" and "Science
and the Occult Today", as well as publishing a newsletter (called
"Exploration") "of academic research into the occult and occult
movements". the author is described as having "conducted field
research in CA, MI, and FL with witch covens and Satanic grottos."
